THE SNOWBALL EXPRESS

This photo shows a cavalcade of large sleds, laden with supplies and pulled by powerful Caterpillar tractors, plodding across an “ice road,” most likely headed for an exploration camp in Northern Manitoba. An alternative to shipping by air, tractor trains were the most cost-effective and efficient transportation method of the day. Note the bubble-dome helicopter hovering in the foreground and the array of scrub trees stuck in the ice to mark the way in case heavy snow should cover the road. (Date and photographer unknown.)
