MOAK LAKE SCHOOL

Taken in front of what served as the Moak Lake schoolhouse, this iconic photo shows teacher, Mrs. McGinnis, flanked by her students. From left to right: John Crandall, Rick Hess, Sheilah & Sarah Crandall, Mary Beth Hess, and Hugh J. Fraser (who still resides with his family in the Thompson area). Since there was no formal schooling there, mothers would share teaching duties on an ad-hock basis using Manitoba correspondence courses. Of the eight children who at various times lived in the exploration camps, and who received some of their early education by means of those courses, all have since gone on to university except for two who became nurses. (Photographer unknown.
